The weekend of the 29th and 30th January 2005 saw The Little Big Horns in the east end of London making a musical contribution to a record who's sales should benefit victims of the Boxing Day Tsunami Disaster. Many different artists and fans of the Mod scene descended on a small recording studio during the weekend to make contributions.
The Little Big Horns & Steve Rinaldi
The house band consisted of: Buddy Ascot on drums, Simon Stebbing on guitar, Mike Evans of The Action and Mark Le Gallez of The Risk on Bass duty and Chris Philpott of Small World on vocals. Added to this were Rod Spark of Modus, Dean from 17 Black and Fay Hallam on Hammond and a brass section featuring Steve Rinaldi from Rinaldi Sings and Steve Trigg and Patsy Gamble from The Little Big Horns, plus Dave Winthrop from Secret Affair. 12-string guitar parts were laid down by John Wratten of Small World and Dave Cairns of Secret Affair.
Ronnie & Art Wood
Other contributors were: Ronnie Wood, a hugely admired guitarist throughout his career with The Birds, Jeff Beck Group, The Creation, Quiet Melon, The Faces & The Rolling Stones, Steve Cradock from Ocean Colour Scene, Mark Joseph, a very talented musician and great vocalist, the legendary vocalists PP Arnold and Chris Farlowe, Jimmy Winston repeated his appearance of 40 years ago on “What’cha Gonna Do About It” and Billy Nicholls (Immediate Records) and Roger Dunbar of The Untamed.

Ian Page & Reg Presley
Sunday saw the great Reg Presley of The Troggs record a vocal for “What’cha” along with singer/songwriter Mark Joseph and Andy Ellison from John’s Children. We were joined in the studio, on what would have been Steve Marriott’s 58th Birthday, by Mollie Marriott and Emma Winston – daughters of the Small Faces. Along with Fay Hallam, they recorded the vocal parts to “Afterglow” – what a beautiful song this is.
Jimmy Winston
There was just time to get a lead vocal from Chris Philpott of Small World before the multitude of Mod musicians who had been present all weekend were able to fill out the studio to perform backing vocals.
John Hellier & PP Arnold The engineer was Ed Deegan, who looked extremely concerned at the amount of people in his studio but kept his composure for the entire weekend. The producer for the weekend was Ian Page of Secret Affair. The Mod Aid 20 project was organized by Biff Bang Pow Records. There will shortly be an “Official” Mod Aid 20 web site going “live” at www.modaid20.org which will include the ability to buy the single as a download once released as well as containing all the news directly from the official source. if you have any questions, queries etc then please contact Mod Aid 20 via admin@biffbangpow.org.uk or tel/fax number 01543 444261. |
